Misawa Airport (三沢空港 / IATA: MSJ / ICAO: RJSM) is one of two commercial airports in Aomori, Honshu's northernmost prefecture. The airport itself is rather small, with only one gate, and only serviced by Japan Airlines (JAL) with flights to Tokyo (Haneda) , Osaka (Itami) and Sapporo (Okadama). The airport mainly serves east Aomori and the cities of Hachinohe as well as the Shimokita Peninsula (下北半島, Shimokita-hantou).
The airfield is shared with the military Misawa airfield (三沢飛行場), an airfield of the Japan Self Defense Forces and the US military. Near the airport is quite a nice aviation museum and only 15 more minutes by car, a wooden replica of Miss Vedool can be found at Sabishiro Beach. The red plane is somewhat of a local hero and can be found turned into all kinds of souvenirs everywhere in the region, including the airport souvenir shops.
Stories about Miss Vedool, the first airplane that flew nonstop over the Pacific Ocean are everywhere in the area.
The observation deck is not free, it costs a couple hundred yen to enter and is locked behind these gates. A rarity for Japan where observation decks at airports are usually free.
There is only one restaurant in the airport, which serves decent Udon.
