Misawa Aviation & Science Museum 青森県立三沢航空科学館

The Misawa Aviation & Science Museum 青森県立三沢航空科学館 is located right next to the Misawa Airport, a small regional airport in Aomori with daily connections to only Tokyo, Osaka, and Sapporo. After visiting the memorial site of Miss Vedool nearby, I decided to visit this museum, which is only 10 minutes by car from the Sabishiri Beach.

The main building is very new and the museum consists of large halls that can fit entire aircrafts. Entrance fee for an adult is 510 Yen (Nov. 2023), very reasonable. Once theough the ticket check agent, the first room has a full replica of the Miss Vedool, the first airplane to fly non-stop across the Pacific Ocean. The first room is entirely dedicated to this aircraft and its history, showing an anime how the aviators got back to North America and also explaining how the sister city agreement between Misawa-shi and Wenatchee came to be.

The second room has a number of historic and modern Japanese aircrafts and also a corner for kids to experience the trust of a jet engine and “flying” through the hall. The third hall has the latest Honda Jet (a business jet plane) with over-the-wing engine mount turbines. Very interesting. Outside are also a number of fighter jets, airplanes, and helicopters on display. Some can even be visited from the inside but not after 4pm (the museum closes at 5pm). All in all, I found it to be a very interesting museum.
