Tottori Sand Museum

I have seen sand sculptures before but the ones displayed at the Tottori Sand Museum elevate this art form to a whole new level. Crafted by using only sand and water, a team of international sculptors creates a range of larger than life sand art pieces which all follow a common theme and are on display for about a year. The theme for 2024 is France. The sand is taken from the nearby famous Tottori sand dunes (Tottori Sakyuu 鳥取砂丘) and returned after the exhibition has finished. The Tottori Sand Museum’s lead sculptor describes the art form as 一期一会の芸術, a once in a lifetime art. Just as Buddhism teaches us that all things are beautiful because of their impermanence, not despite of it.
