Aya Castle is probably the cutest castle I have been to in Japan. I was hiking in Miyazaki prefecture and with some time left before needing to heading back, I stopped by Aya castle in the town of the same name. The castle was built in the early 1300’s and changed ownership multiple times, among the rulers were the Ito clan and the Shimazu clan. The original castle was destroyed and the keep was rebuilt and is now home to a museum. There is also a good view of the surroundings from the castle’s upper deck.

As in many other Japanese castles, old samurai armor and other relics are on display.

In the castle park, there are also a number of nice craft shops.
