Potsdam

Business took me to Potsdam this week. Having grown up in Berlin, I realized I didn't really know anything about Potsdam, except for the Sanssoucci castle and the Babelsberg movie production site, of course. The latter of which is famous for having been the production site for famous German movies such as Metropolis and The Blue Angel, and more recently Inglorious Basterds and Cloud Atlas.

It turned out that Potsdam has more to offer than first meets the eye. Especially if someone likes gates.

The first one when approaching the city center is the Nauener Tor. A well preserved English-gothic themed gate which is really nice to look at.

Then, there is the Brandenburg Gate in Potsdam. Not to be mixed up with the famous Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. It was build in 1770 and has its name because people wanted to go to Brandenburg (city in the German state with the same name) back then had to pass through this very gate. It's quite a magnificent landmark.

Although having stayed there with the company, we went out sometimes in the evenings. Besides a really good and cheap cocktail bar near the Nauener Tor, I really liked one place in particular. A alternative bar called OLGA. It had a kind of dirty look but somehow also had a lot of character. Apparently, the bar is a meeting point for the left-winged scene in Potsdam and also one of the cheaper places.

Almost no one was sitting inside. Instead, everybody was sitting in front of the OLGA, mostly right on the boardwalk. Very interesting and nicely alternative. To date, I have never seen such a place in Berlin.
