I recently achieved Lufthansa's prestigious Frequent Traveller status. The status can be achieved with 36.000 miles in a year. This year, business took me to Texas twice, where I received approx. 20.000 miles for each trip so these two were enough.
So, is it worth it? It depends. The only things that I find really useful is the extra baggage allowed (as airlines usually charge a very high fee for baggage exceeding the max. weight allowed) and the access to the lounges, where free food, drinks, and newspapers are served while waiting for the flight. However, the lounges can only be accessed when having booked a flight with one of the participating airlines.
For non business travellers, the status is hard to achieve, considering that one needs to accumulate 36k miles in a calendar year. For business travellers, this is a nice-to-have gimmick, but certainly not a must-have.
What I really was surprised about was Lufthansa's customer service. They are doing a great job. Shortly after I tweeted the new status and included the #lufthansa hash tag, they answered me with the following message:
Also, when collecting miles with StarAlliance, one might consider collecting not with Miles&More from Lufthansa but with Miles&Bonus from Aegean Airlines. Apparently, it is the fastest way to earn Gold status (similar to Senator with Lufthansa) within Star Alliance, with the requirement of only 40k miles in one calendar year.
What are the benefits?
- Priority Check-In
- Waitlist Priority
- 1 more piece of baggage or up to 40kg
- Access to lounges of participating airlines
- 25% more miles
- Miles do not expire unless the status expires
- Receiving the Lufthansa Exclusive magazine
