Memento Park メメント公園

There are many sights worth seeing in Budapest. The so-called Memento Park is not one of them.

The entrance to the Memento Park near Budapest.

Although much heralded on tripadvisor, I thought the exhibition was a big disappointment, here is why:

1.) Access
It's not easily accessible. Most of things to do in Budapest are somewhere along the three Metro lines. The Memento park is rather far away from the city center in the south-west. There is a direct bus leaving from   Deák tér, the intersection all three Metro lines meet, only once a day, at 11 am. With 4.900 HUF/pers. it is also comparatively expensive.

A hole in the form of a communist star in one of the statues.

2.) Scope
When I first heard Communist statue park, I thought it would be a huge selection of propaganda statue leftovers in some kind of open air museum. While the latter is true, it is rather small. It is not even a park, more like three squares in the form of circles (wow, is this an oxymoron?). Without a tour guide, yoyu most likely have seen it all in less than 10 minutes.

Unknown (to me) statue.

3.) Content
Unless you take part in a guided tour through the relatively small park (I would rather call it 3 squares), there is no explanation to what the statues are all about. Names and short description given directly on the plates of the statues are all in Hungarian.

To be fair, some of the large statues are impressing.

My recommendation: Skip the Memento park and go to Janos hegy (link follows) instead.
