Eisa 2010 in Shinjuku - エイサ新宿2010

One positive aspect about living in Shinjuku is that cultural events are usually not that far away. Every year, a group of Okinawa-enthusiasts are dancing and cheering on the streets of Shinjuku during a hot and humid July weekend. The so-called Eisa-festival basically is a street-parade with many different groups of dancers who perform as they go through the streets of Higashi-Shinjuku (Kabukicho).

Those lovely girls performed some traditional dance...

...and got the huge crowd in motion.

The groups were all dressed differently. This group had yellow clothes and one of them looked like one of the singers of KISS with all this makeup put on.

Next, another group tried to lift and move this huge pole in circles.

Huge banners on bamboo sticks remembered the crowd on the name of festival.

Participants were not only adults, but kids as well.

THe crowded streets felt narrow with all these masses.

The presence of the skyscrapers in the background gave the spectacle a unique atmosphere.

Drums are a fundamental instrument supporting the Okinawan chantings.

Dancing to the sound of the drums.

Typically for Japan, a huge LCD screen in the background displayed advertisements to the visitors.

Because it is summer season right now in Japan, many visitors came in traditional clothes, like these two girls in Yukata 浴衣.

After having performed for a while, the groups moved on to the next stage.

Here is a group just waiting for a performance.

And yet another one...

... until the event was over early evening.
