例大祭 - Rei Taisai

Unbeknownst to me, there was a Matsuri 祭 (Festival) today in the area where I live. The Matsuri season is approaching indeed and it was quite nice to see so many people filling the street, wearing traditional clothing (Happi ハッピ) and celebrating. What happens during a Matsuri here is hard to describe. In the area where the Matsuri is held, there are people everywhere, doing either something at several boothes on the street or carrying on of many small shrines around.

In front of my place, people preparing for the festival.

Two streets further, a shrine is carried by many people. Note the police that secures the area.

A close-up.

Some booth on the street.

In Yotsuya Icchoume.

Somebody waiting for some action.

Shinjuku-Dori, looking towards Yotsuya Station.

The advertisement of the Matsuri on a public board. Its name is Rei Taisai, hosted by one of the local shrines, the Suga Shrine 須賀神社.

Even the statues were decorated for this one.

Another statue in Yotsuya.

These paper lanterns were in front of every participating shop of the area.

A group of people carrying a shrine approaching.

According to their Happi, they are from Araki-Cho.

Must be tough carrying around.

But they seem to enjoy it.

Even the little ones. :)
