男山 - Otokoyama

Not far away from Kyoto is a small mountain that is worth visiting. Its name is Otokoyama 男山 and is located near Yawata station 八幡駅. Despite being accessible via a cable car, the mountain is good for a hike and provides a small albeit scenic summit.

The journey starts in Yawatashi station 八幡市駅.

As everywhere in Japan, there is a cable car for all who do not want to go up the mountain themselves. The cable car frequently is in service between Yawata station 八幡駅 and Otokoyama Sanjo 男山山上.

The way up is very steep. Apparently, 50 percent fo the traffic is during new year when many people go up that hill for Hatsumode 初詣, celebrating the start of the new year.

On top of Otokoyama, there is a nice but short path to follow.

And also nice old shrines.

About halfway through, there is a huge place to rest and this weird monument.

The main attraction, however, is this nice shrine, the Iwashimizu Hachiman-gu 岩清水八幡宮 on top of Otokoyama.

People praying for good things to happen.

To the side.

Many wishes are made, this one wishes to pass an important exam.

The surroundings are quite nice as well.

With very nice bamboo forests.

The way to the main shrine.

Also, there is a viewing platform from which one can oversee parts of Kansai 関西.

Highways,

A river.
