龍谷大学 / Ryukoku University

In February, I visited Kyoto again for the first time in 2 years. On the first day, I also paid Ryukoku Daigaku (Ryukoku University) a visit. I studied at Ryukoku 龍谷 (龍 = Dragon /谷 = Valley) in 2006 as a part of an exchange with my home University in Germany. Although almost 4 years have passed since then, I remember my time there quite clearly. Now, coming back to this place seems more than nostalgic. Many things have changed but some are still as I remember them. The University is located near Fukakusa Station 深草駅 on the Keihan 京阪 line in southern Kyoto, Fushimi district 伏見区. The face of the entrance changed a lot. Now it is much greener than when I used to study there. Also, more banks have been installed. I don't remember so many places to sit. The front of the library looks still the same. The prestigious ceremony hall. I wonder what this sculpture thing is in front of the building. The University is heavily influenced by Buddhism. Yakyuu・野球

I have never seen a game of baseball (or Yakyuu 野球, as it is known in Japan) until this week. Baseball is not very popular in Germany but it is the biggest sport in Japan. But even here, I never had the opportunity to watch a game. Until this Wednesday. I was invited by co-workers of mine and was eager to know what all the fuss is about. After work, I made my way to the Tokyo Dome. Tokyo dome is located in central Tokyo, right next to an amusement park. Today, the Yomiuri Giants played vs. the Tokyo Yakult Swallows. Both teams are from Tokyo. There was a huge merchandise shop for the Tokyo Giants so I believe the Tokyo Dome is their home arena. The building is quite large, it took me a while to walk around it, since I arrived on a site opposite to the entrance. On the way, I passed by the Tokyo Giants fan shop and checked out the shirts, hats and towels (but didn't buy any). Japan Vending Machines - 日本の自動販売機

Vending machines, or Jidohanbaiki 自動販売機, are virtually everywhere in Japan. Those machines an be found at basically every second corner in populated areas like Tokyo. While most of them offer all kind of drinks (usually non-alcoholic beverages), there are some more unconventional vending machines out there. This one sells books... ... found at Nakano station 中野駅. Some offer food such as this one: rice. Seen in Nakano-Sakaue 中野坂上. Some of them are pretty scare, like this one in Nishi-Shinjuku 西新宿... ... with 24/7 surveillance. Some of them serve a greater purpose, such as this one that distributes a part of its collections to charity. Seen at Sophia University campus.
